The Boston College Eagles took it to the Dartmouth Big Green last night in a convincing 73-57 victory in Chestnut Hill last night. Led by DeMarr Langford Jr., his brother Makai Ashton Langford, the Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back, soon they were up by 20 and found themselves dancing in the locker room celebrating with new Coach Earl Grant.
Coach Grant comes to the Eagles after his tenure at The College of Charleston, which he lead to the Big Dance in 2018. He walks into this role after a war-torn Covid year which made it difficult to mesh this team. The Eagles went 4-16 amongst shutdowns and this turned out to be the first time DeMarr Jr played in front of a college crowd which he says gave him some jitters. He came out and put up 16/5/2 on 8 of 10 Shooting. About as solid as they come. He looks across the court to see his brother Makai who showed up with a 10/6/3 stat line which included 2 for 2 from three point land. Mark my words, this team will make some waves in Division I hoops this year. Something to be said for chemistry. They have already had a little fast break, brother to brother action and I look forward to following them this year.
The Ashton-Langford name should immediately ring a bell for anyone in Worcester or surrounding who have followed basketball the last 30years. DeMarr Langford is a legend. I've already made that abundantly clear that I was, am now, and will forever be a fan and remember his career here. North High Beast, Quinsigamond, New Bedford Legend...just an all around winner. All I ever heard about was how humble this dude was and how hard he worked. Heart. Just makes sense that this man was born to lead, and here we are watching his kids play together at BC. The Ashton Langford Basketball Academy. After I did my Old School Hoops show with him, Diago McClain, Rashad Minor and the others, we started to brainstorm. We collaborated to create a podcast showcasing local music talent that doesn't get the spotlight they deserve here in the city. The name of the show is WorKing Progress PodCast. Not even sure how he finds time to do that but please check it out. On top of his work ethic, I have to say, one of the most genuine human beings I have ever met. These kids are lucky to have a leader like DeMarr and they haven't done anything but follow in his footsteps to greatness. I joked with him recently that he is now Worcester's Lavar Ball lol
Now listen. It's not a shock that these kids have made it to this level. I mean, DeMarr's wife Sasha Ashton was an incredible hoops star at Burncoat High, 1K Point scorer there and Worcester State. In fact here is her bio so I don't leave anything out.
Wtf. And here I am remembering little league games and church league softball. Imagine the competition in this household. All I'm saying is that if this isn't proof that these two can lead your children to that top level of play, tune in Friday night when Boston College takes on Holy Cross...You'll see two of ALBA's Greatest success stories on the court together.
